It’s Going To Get Worse, Before It Gets Better

*I really have been trying to keep this blog uplifting, fun and educational, so I apologize in advance for any whining that comes out in this post!  Just keeping it real!

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you probably know that we’re renovating our house right now.  A BIG renovation.  No walls being torn down, but our brick fireplace has been torn out, walls for closets are being put in and all new floors are being installed throughout most of the main level of our ranch house.  Oh, and lots of painting going on.  You can read more about the renovation here and here.

Can I just say for the record that renovations are no fun?  I know, you’re shocked, right?  Don’t get me wrong, I knew there would be mess, delays and frustrations before we started, but I didn’t realize how hard it would be to live and work in the house while we’re trying to renovate.

I’m the kind of person who likes things put away, no clutter and no mess.  Our house looked like this a few months ago.  I’m really having a hard time thinking straight with all of the mess going on, not to mention the sawing and hammering!

Because of the chaos going on, I’m basically spinning my wheels, and not getting much done.  So, my blog has suffered for it, and I really dislike that.

I shared some pictures of the mess a few weeks ago, but that was nothing.  Here’s what our house looks like this morning.

The living room with it’s lovely addition of the washer and dryer.  The flooring company has lost our flooring for the laundry room, so I’m not sure when the washer and dryer will go back in there.  You can see a bit of the laundry room on the right with it’s green walls.

The kitchen with it’s new white appliances.  Unfortunately, the valve for the water line was broken off during the installation of the refrigerator, so that’s why it’s still sitting out from the wall.  Notice the V board on the peninsula?  Kind of exciting to have some of the cabinets white!  More about that in a later post.  The hardwood floors have been installed, but mostly covered up.  You can see a bit of them behind the refrigerator.  I LOVE them!  The new counter tops are supposed to come next week.

Every room in the house except our master bath and my drapery studio are torn up or is storing stuff from the rest of the house.

The basement family room.  This is one of the two rooms we’re living in right now.

This is the other room we’re living in – our master bedroom.  This is how it looked for 3 days last week while we were painting the V board for the kitchen peninsula.  It was too cold to paint it in the garage.  It was quite a feat to make it to the bathroom in the middle of the night!  No kidding!

While the renovation has been consuming our time and energy lately, things really got put into perspective for us a couple of weeks ago when our daughter had a health scare.  Luckily, she is fine now, but things were very scary for a few days.   It got me to thinking, this is just a house.  We’ll get through this renovation eventually, it’s nothing compared to our family and friends who are much more important in our lives.

I just have to share this picture of a couple of our many blessings – our two grand kids.  This was taken last week at their combined birthday party.

So, thanks for letting me vent about the chaos and mess.  Hopefully soon I’ll have some after pictures to share.

  1. Cute picture of the grandkids! And I don’t envy you with the uproar in your house, but I am sure you will love it once it is done!

    Hi Jann,
You have two little angels right there. How old are they?
By the looks of it, its going to be a tough work, and i think if that is our basement, my brother will surely place a table tennis table in there.. thats a lot of space for fun…

    • Thanks Emelie! We think they’re pretty special. They are 4 and 2 years old. We did have a tennis table in the family room at one time, and then my husband built the bar.
